Background, Participation in Battles and Martyrdom

Hazrat Yazid(ra) belonged to the Banu Asad bin Khuzaima tribe of the Quraish. Hazrat Yazid(ra) was a confederate of the Banu Abd ash-Shams (al-Sirat al-Nabawiyyah li Ibn Hisham, p. 460, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2001). Some have also reported his name as Arbad, however, this is incorrect. (Usdul Ghaba, Vol. 5, p. 452, Yazid bin Ruqaish(ra), Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2008)

Hazrat Yazid’s(ra) father’s name was Ruqaish bin Riyab and his title was Abu Khalid. Hazrat Yazid(ra) participated in all of the battles alongside the Holy Prophet(sa), including the battles of Badr, Uhud and Khandaq.

Hazrat Yazid(ra) killed Amr bin Sufyan during the Battle of Badr, who was a member of the Tay tribe. One of Hazrat Yazid’s(ra) brother’s name was Hazrat Saeed bin Ruqaish(ra), who migrated from Mecca to Medina along with his family and is counted among the foremost Muhajireen [those Muslims who migrated from Mecca to Medina]. One of Hazrat Yazid’s(ra) brother’s name was Hazrat Abd ar-Rahman bin Ruqaish(ra), who participated in the Battle of Uhud. (al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra li ibn Sa‘d, Vol. 4, p. 370, Yazid bin Ruqaish(ra), Dar-e-Ihyaa al-Turath al-Arabiy, 1996)

One of Hazrat Yazid’s(ra) sister’s name was Hazrat Aminah bint Ruqaish(ra), who accepted Islam early on in Mecca. She also migrated to Medina along with her family. (al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra li ibn Sa‘d, Vol. 3, p. 371, Yazid bin Ruqaish(ra), Dar-e-Ihyaa al-Turath al-Arabiy, 1996)
