After tashhud, ta’awwuz and recitation of Sura Al-Fatiha, Huzur Aqdas (may Allah strengthen him with His Mighty Help) said:
The Promised Messiah (as) says, at one place:
“In the Holy Quran, Allah, the Exalted, has placed good, virtuous conduct along with faith. And good, virtuous conduct is that in which there is not the least bit of discord or corruption. Remember that the actions of man are always set upon by thieves - what are these? These are ostentation, meaning when a man does something for show; and conceit, meaning that after having done something he feels happy in his heart [such happiness that comes from self-admiration]. And all types of wickedness and sins that are done by him cause his actions to become falsified, negated. Good, virtuous conduct is that in which there is not even the thought of any kind of excess or wrongdoing, or conceit, or ostentation, or arrogance or dispossession of the rights of human beings.”
Huzur repeats these words of the Promised Messiah (as) again: Good, virtuous conduct is that in which there is not even the thought of any kind of excess or wrongdoing, or conceit, or ostentation, or arrogance or dispossession of the rights of human beings..
“Just as man is saved by his good deeds on the day of Judgment, he is saved in this world in the same way,” meaning that good conduct has value here in this world also. This means that just as good deeds will result in benefits in the Hereafter, they will lead to good results here also. Or this could also mean that just as Paradise is earned by such good conduct in the after-life they can also make our lives paradisiacal here.
The Promised Messiah (as) says, “if there is even one person of good, virtuous conduct in the house, that house remains safe. So you should know that so long as you do not do good deeds, only your belief will not help.”
He says: “You should attend to your actions with a determined resolve, and a solid and binding pledge.” This means we should make a strong and binding pledge. Then likening faith to a tree, the Promised Messiah (as) goes on to say that even the very best tree needs to be treated with care and taken care of in order for it to be of benefit to the people and indeed remain alive. One has to attend to it and take care of it. In like manner, in order to perfect one’s faith, deeds or actions are needed. And one’s own faith is in need of care and attention with one’s deeds because without this even while having faith, or while claiming to believe, one can not be called a momin, a true believer.
Without deeds or actions, man is like a tree whose beautiful green branches have been cut to make it look disfigured, whose fruits have been discarded and left to rot and from whose shade-giving branches the creatures of God have been deprived.
The branches of a tree, no matter how strong its roots may be, if it is deprived of nutrients from fertilizer, and if its budding branches and shoots are laid waste, after some time, that tree will die. Its strong roots will afford it no benefit. Even if it remains alive for some time, such a tree, barren of branches and yielding no benefit, will attract no one’s attention. No one will look at it even. The attention of everyone will be drawn towards that beautiful tree or plant, and everyone will look towards such a beautiful tree or plant which is green and lush and whose beauty can be seen and which, at the appropriate time, becomes laden with flowers and fruits, which affords shade on a hot day. It is such a tree that the people would like.
So, without a doubt, faith is like the root of a tree. And without a doubt a Muslim makes the claim that my faith is strong. We see this being expressed frequently by Muslims and they have a jealousy for the honor of the faith also. Many among them become ready to fight, and to kill or be killed for the sake of their faith. These days, there are two different groups that have come into being and formed all sorts of organizations and all kinds of claims are made by them regarding the strength and firmness of their faith - but are they like this beautiful tree or like a beautiful garden that is proving of benefit to the world, and are the people, by seeing its beauty being drawn towards it in their droves?
The intensity with which these extremist groups are perpetrating their extremist acts, with the same intensity the people of the world are shunning them and running away from them.
The faith which the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) had brought had succeeded not only in drawing even its bitterest enemies towards itself and making them into its friends but indeed had made them into its passionate lovers who had, so to speak, become imprisoned in its intense love.
The effect of the teaching of the Holy Prophet (sa) was such that when a Muslim government, at one place, thought that they could not successfully defend against the Roman government, and decided to leave a captured territory where the majority of the people were Christians and Jews - the Christians and Jews of that territory got together and bid farewell to the Muslim army crying and weeping and said that we pray that you again capture this territory so that we may continue forever to benefit from your shade-giving and fruit laden tree. The facilities that you have provided, none of our governments were ever able to provide to us.
They valued those Muslims because with their faith, their every deed and action, was beneficent.
So empty declarations and expressions of faith and of the strength of its roots, serve no purpose until and unless the green and lush branches of good and virtuous conduct and the fruit of such branches is not visible with all its beauty and splendour and are not proving of benefit to the people. And when this beauty and beneficence is evident the world also is drawn to it and pays attention and gathers around it and puts forth its efforts to safeguard it.
This is why Allah, the Exalted, has commanded every Muslim to not only be of strong faith but rather in almost every place where faith is discussed, mention is also made of good and virtuous deeds - making the two conditional one upon the other. And to develop this condition among the people Allah, the Exalted, sends His Prophets. This condition is born within the believers at such a time when they develop a connection with the Prophet of the Age.
As I have said, there are some very large groups who, in the name of religion and of faith, express the strength of their roots but what is it that we observe happening? Not only are their own mutual hatreds increasing, and one group, in order to establish its supremacy over the other, does all it can, using just or unjust means, by tyranny or excess and wrongdoing, but also the non-Muslim world is becoming fearful of Islam because of them.
That religion which embraced love of all faiths so that even the non-Muslim subjects of such governments became ready to defend them; its condition today is that, what to talk about outsiders painting this picture, the mutual condition of the Muslims themselves is such that, because of the lack of good and virtuous deeds among them, it presents the scene described in the words of the Holy Quran: quloobohum shatta;
their hearts are divided.
Today, it is the duty of every Ahmadi to present a true picture of these good and virtuous deeds because he has accepted the Imam and Prophet of the Age. The Jama’at of the Promised Messiah (as) is indeed that tree planted by God Almighty whose roots are strong and whose branches also are green and lush and beautiful and fruit-bearing and which draw the attention of the world towards itself. And this is all because the Promised Messiah (as) introduced us to the true teachings of Islam and encouraged us to follow in the footsteps of the Excellent Exemplar, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa), and laid great stress upon it and drew our attention to it and made clear its importance to us.
So it is the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at alone whose roots are strong and branches are green and lush and beautiful and fruit-bearing and which draws the world to itself - this is that tree by seeing which, in every part of the world, the people ask what type of Islam is it that you are presenting?
There are innumerable examples of this that come to pass that, by seeing the beauty of true Islam, people are left amazed and astounded. In Africa, in one place, a mosque was being inaugurated, a local Chief, who was a Christian, also had been invited, and so he participated. He said plainly that I have not come because of my love for you, I only came to see that what type of Muslims are these, in this day and age, who have invited a non-Muslim and a Christian also to the inauguration of their mosque. And now, coming and seeing that people from different religions are gathered here, I am even more amazed. And Ahmadis, being Muslims themselves, are demonstrating such high levels of moral excellences that has no equal. They are meeting everyone, whether small or big, rich or poor, with love and affection and they have such wonderful relationships and such high moral qualities that they are displaying here as cannot be seen anywhere else.
This Chief came and said that such mosques and such Islam is the need of the hour. So he said that all my doubts and suspicions that I had about Islam have been dispelled. He went on to add that you have not just given this area a new mosque but rather you have bestowed upon us a new life. You have taught us the lofty values and ways of life.
These are the kinds of trees about which the Holy Quran has stated that their roots are strong in the ground, and because of faith and good and virtuous acts, if men are likened to trees, then their green and lush branches are such as to be touching the heavens.
Thus, as I said, because we believe in the Imam of the Age, it is the duty of every Ahmadi that along with having strong faith become such green and lush branches, become the beautiful leafs of the green and lush branches, become the beautiful flowers and fruits that adorn those branches which should not just look beautiful to the world but should also be of benefit to them. Otherwise, being perfect in faith and belief without actions is of no benefit.
As I have told before that the people who apparently are perfect in their faith and beliefs, or appear to be so, or declare themselves to be so, yet they are becoming the stumbling block for the people of the world. We can discharge the obligation that is upon us by virtue of being Ahmadis when we become such as can manifest our good and virtuous deeds to everyone. When we can become the people of our street and city and country who show the beauty of Islam by our good and virtuous actions. We should be not be like those who are involved in any kind discord and disputes, nor such as involve themselves in gossip, slander or backbiting, nor should we belittle others, nor should we be like those who are devoid of mercy, nor like those who follow good with taunt and injury. Indeed we should be such as safeguard themselves against such bad actions. We should instead be those who demonstrate the highest good morals.
The Holy Quran tells us again and again to adopt the highest of morals.
and do good and virtuous deeds. Some people have the habit, under impulse of some momentary emotion, to do someone a favor, or help him, but then afterwards, at one time or another, they remind him that I had done this favor for you, or they entertain the hope that this person, who is now under an obligation to them, for this favor, will remain their slave forever. And if the person under obligation fails to fulfill what was expected from him they do not hesitate to cause him difficulties. This is not the Islamic teaching. Allah, the Exalted, says in the Holy Quran:
O ye who believe! render not vain your alms by taunt and injury.. (14:25)
Because these things are done by those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day, whose faith is weak, and not just weak but who, in fact, are devoid of faith.
Allah, the Exalted, has directed a believer, again and again, in many places in the Holy Quran, with reference to different things, that along with faith, good and virtuous actions are necessary and that there are a variety of benefits of this. Thus while a believer becomes a source of benefit for the others through the doing of good and virtuous deeds, he himself also is found eating the sweet fruits of these good and virtuous actions. For example, Allah, the Exalted, says concerning those who believe and do good and virtuous deeds that such people shall be those who shall attain the forgiveness of Allah. These people shall be the ones who shall be bestowed high elevated stations in Paradise. They shall be in such Gardens wherein streams shall be flowing and they shall be the owners of those streams.
Then Allah, the Exalted, says that those who, along with faith, had done good and virtuous deeds, shall receive such great and best rewards as are beyond your power of comprehension. A simple declaration of faith alone does not give one the right to receive the best of rewards, but rather, if faith is accompanied by good and virtuous deeds, then one will become the recipient of the best of rewards and one will be bestowed with Gardens and become the recipient of God’s forgiveness.
Then it is also stated that those who, together with faith, also do good and virtuous deeds, shall be bestowed with pure provision by God Almighty - provision that is for this world and also for the Hereafter. Those who do good and virtuous deeds shall have no fear. They shall be in peace. They shall suffer from no kind of worry or preoccupation. They shall not have fear of this world nor of the world to come that they were not able to do any virtuous deeds. Allah, the Exalted, will bless their hearts with comfort and satisfaction. And how could they have any fear - they were those who did good and virtuous deeds for the sake of winning the pleasure of God. After doing every good and virtuous deed they are going closer and closer to Allah, the Exalted.
Then Allah, the Exalted, says at one place:
Those who believe and do good deeds — the Gracious God will create love in their hearts. (19:97)
The word used for love here is ‘wudd’ which does not connote a superficial type of love and connection but means a deep love and profound connection. Such strong connection as could never be rent asunder. In fact the relationship or connection that is meant is like when a stake is driven forcefully into the ground - that type of strong connection is what is meant here. This is how that love should be established in the heart. Thus this verse would mean that for those who have strong faith and carry out good and virtuous deeds Allah, the Exalted, shall, for such believers, put His own love in their hearts as if forcefully driving a stake into the ground. They shall love God in this manner and then they will go on advancing in their faith and in the doing of good and virtuous deeds. Or it could mean that God Almighty will have such love for such believers as will never end. Thus if the love of God become so forcefully embedded in the heart of a human being or God should love the believers in such a way as if their love has been embedded in the heart of God Almighty, then who can be more successful than such a person.
Such a person becomes in his own being such a beautiful and shade-giving tree which gives benefit to others because his every action, due to the love of God, is such as earns the reward from God Almighty and bestows benefit upon others.
Then this verse also means that Allah will place firmly, in the hearts of such as have faith and do good and virtuous deeds, the love of humanity also. Thus, a true believer can never even think that he should inflict pain and suffering upon another human being. Love for humanity requires that a true believer always remain in the mode of thinking how he can be of benefit to humanity.
As I have said earlier, if this thinking were to develop and take root among the Muslims, then depriving each other of their dues, committing injustices against one another, and killing people which are found among their governments, and other so called organizations, and the common people - and these days we see such actions very routinely - would never be seen. The teachings of Allah, the Exalted, are not being acted upon at all. This is why all this is happening. But the injustice of it all is that all this tyranny is being carried out in the name of Allah, the Exalted, whereas Allah, the Exalted, says that you should develop ‘wudd’ - the deep and profound love that should become embedded in the hearts as a stake driven into the ground forcefully. Become such people as are the source of beneficence for others.
Thus, if the real and true teachings of Islam were acted upon we would never see the pain and suffering that is being inflicted upon each other in the Muslims world. And a beautiful visualization of the Islamic shade-giving tree would grow in the minds of the people of the world.
Then this verse may mean also that in the hearts of humanity the love for the Muslims would become established similarly forcefully as a stake driven into the ground strongly. Allah, the Exalted, does indeed possess the Power that He should make this happen but in order for this to be attained He has made it incumbent that along with faith there be present good and virtuous deeds. As I have said, the Muslims of the first epoc were loved by the people - it was the love that Allah had placed in the hearts of the Christians and the Jews, who used to cry when they would see the Muslims leaving their lands and used to pray for their return. Indeed history tells us this also that the Jews used to say that we are willing to lay down our lives but will not permit the Christian army to enter the city, you should stay here and we will provide security. This was the impact of the righteous deeds which was demonstrated by the Muslims at every stage and which had drawn the attention of the world towards this beautiful tree and had been a source of much benefit for the world.
Today, it is the responsibility of the servants of the true servant of the Holy Prophet (sa) that along with making firm the roots of their faith they become the beautiful leafs, branches and fruits of the tree of good and virtuous deeds which should attract and pull the world towards the beauties of Islam and which should be the source of benefit for the world.
We should be those who love Allah, the Exalted and we should be the ones who win the love of God also. Our priority should be to love humanity and we also should be the ones who win the attention of humanity, because without doing this we cannot fulfill the purpose of entering into the Baia’at [Oath of Initiation] of the Promised Messiah (as). The Promised Messiah (as) has drawn our attention to this many times in his writings, discourses and meetings that we should turn our attention to the doing of good and virtuous deeds. That we should pay attention to our actions and that we should perform such good and virtuous deeds as are in accord with the will and pleasure of Allah, the Exalted and which should be such as save the world from pains and suffering.
I had read a quote from his writings before and now I will place before you some other extracts from his writings. He said at one occasion:
Only such a one enters into our Jama’at who makes our teaching a guide for his actions and acts upon it to the best of his abilities and capacities. But he who is satisfied with just the name but fails to act upon the teaching he should remember that God Almighty has decided to make this Jama’at into a very special Jama’at and any person who in reality is not in the Jama’at cannot remain in the Jama’at by simply acquiring the name. A time shall come upon him, sooner or later, that he shall be separated from it. So, as far as is possible, make your actions subject to the teaching which is being given. Actions are like wings, and without actions, a man cannot fly upwards to attain spiritual advancement and he cannot achieve those lofty objectives which Allah, the Exalted, has placed below these good and virtuous actions. God has bestowed intelligence upon the winged animals but if they do not make use of this God given intelligence, they would not be able to carry out the things that they are capable of doing. For example, if the honey bee did not have this intelligence she would not be able to produce honey and similarly messenger pigeons have to make so much use of their intelligence, how they undertake such long journeys and take the letters to their destinations. Similarly many such wondrous jobs are done through these winged animals. So first and foremost, it is necessary that man make use of his intelligence, and ponder on the work that he is about to carry out, as to whether it is in accordance with the will and pleasure of God or not. Once he has done this, and makes use of his intelligence, then comes the stage of making use of one’s hands. He should not be guilty of laziness or negligence. And yes, it is necessary to verify that the teaching is indeed correct. Sometimes it happens that the teaching is indeed correct but man, due to his foolishness or ignorance; or due to someone else’s mischievousness or misguidance, he falls victim to a deception, so one should make proper investigation with a clear mind.
The Promised Messiah (as) is advising us as well as others.
At another place he says:
It is necessary that everyone should have the fear of God and the fear of God will make him inherit many virtuous deeds. The person who fears Allah, the Exalted, he alone is good because due to this fear he will be blessed with an insight by means of which he is saved from committing sins. Most people are of the type that they feel shame when they ponder on the graces and bounties and honors that God has bestowed upon them, and safeguard themselves from His disobedience and transgression. But there is a group of people also who are afraid of His chastisement. In reality, the truth is that the good and righteous person is indeed he who is deemed to be good in the determination of God. There are many people who deceive themselves and consider themselves to be muttaqi [righteous and God-fearing] but in reality a muttaqi is he whose name is written down, in the register of Allah, the Exalted, as being a muttaqi. At this time the attribute of Allah that is being manifested is that of His being Sattar [the One Who is Hidden and concealed and Who covers up the fault and shortcomings of the people] but on the Day of Judgment when all veils shall be lifted everything will be revealed. At that time there will be many such as appear today to be very muttaqi and righteous but they will be seen as being very great transgressors and evildoers. The reason for this is that the doing of good and virtuous deeds can not be accomplished based on our own suggestions and declarations. In reality, good and virtuous deeds are those that are free of every type of discord and corruption because ‘saleh’ [good and virtuous] is the opposite of fasaad [corrupt]. Just as food is pure and wholesome when it is not raw, not fully cooked nor burnt, nor should it be a low-grade species, but it should be such that can immediately become absorbed into the body. Similarly, it is necessary that there should be no type of disorder or corruption in the actions that can be considered to be good and virtuous deeds. In other words, it should be in accord with the commandments of Allah, the Exalted and then it should be in accord with the practice of the Holy Prophet (sa) and there should be, in it, no sign of weariness, nor ostentation, nor conceit, nor should it be something proposed by oneself; if the action is such as described then it can be said to be a good and virtuous deed. And this is a very rare and precious thing.
Then speaking on how Satan misleads and how he keeps on hounding the believers, and for this reason every believer needs to safeguard his faith and good and virtuous deeds from the attacks of Satan, the Promised Messiah (as) says:
Satan is always lying in wait to ambush in order to mislead man, and to pervert or corrupt his actions so much so that even in virtuous actions he wishes to mislead and misguide him.
Hazrat Khalifatul Masih (ab) repeats this last part of the sentence again, “Satan wishes even to mislead and misguide in the doing of good and virtuous deeds,” and says do not think that Satan does not mislead and misguide in the doing of good deeds.
“And he makes plans to create some kind of discord or disorder. If Salat is being offered, he tries to mix into it some form of conceit or other kind of corruption. The one who is leading the salat, he tries to involve him also in some sort of such trial. So you should never be unafraid of his attacks, because his attacks on the wicked and evil-doers are manifest and open because they are, as if, his prey; but he does not refrain from attacking the devout also. And finding a way, in one way or the other, he makes an attack upon them. Those people who are under the Grace of God, and are informed of the fine and subtle ways and means of attack of Satan, they pray to Allah, the Exalted, to be safeguarded from Satan, but those who are still in an imperfect state and weak and feeble, they fall prey sometime or the other, to such attacks.
Then on the need to act, to carry out actions, the Promised Messiah (as) says:
Man thinks that it is sufficient to recite the credo [Kalima] with the tongue or to simply say with the tongue, astaghfirullah - I seek forgiveness of Allah - is enough. But remember that verbal deceptive utterances are not enough. Even if a man says with his tongue astaghfirullah, a thousand times, or recite the words of tasbeeh [reciting the words Alhamdolillah (All praise belongs to Allah) 33 times; Subhanallah (Holy is Allah) 33 times; and Allah-o-Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) 34 times] a hundred times, no benefit will be derived from it, because God has made man a man and not a parrot. This is in the nature of the parrot that it keep on repeating sounds with his tongue and does not understand a single thing. The duty of a man is that what he utters with his mouth, he should say after having thought over it and he should also act in accord with what he says.
What you are saying, think over it, and then act on it also.
But if he goes on speaking like a parrot then remember that just repeating with the tongue draws no blessings unless and until the heart is not in tune with it and actions are not carried out in accord with what is being said - until then these will be considered just utterances and there is no goodness or blessing in them because these are mere spoken words even though they may be the words of the Holy Quran or Istighfar.
What Allah desires are actions, this is why, again and again, He commanded that you should do good and virtuous deeds. Until this is not done you cannot go near to God. Some foolish ones say that we have completed the reciting of the whole of the Holy Quran in one day but someone should ask them what benefit did you derive from this. You made use just of your tongue and left the rest of your limbs and organs totally idle whereas Allah, the Exalted, has made all these so that they should all be made use of. This is why it is recorded in the ahadees [Sayings of the Holy Prophet] that some people recite the Quran and the Quran curses them because their recitation of it is mere saying of its words and no actions are done in accord with its teachings. The person who does not act in accord with the dictates and limits of Allah, the Exalted, he makes a jest of the Divine Word, because just reading of His Word is not what He desires. He desires deeds and actions.
Then he says:
Remember well that mere utterance of words and repetition of formulas is of no benefit unless and until deeds accompany such spoken words and hands and feet and the other organs are not used to do good and virtuous deeds. Just as by sending the Holy Quran, God took help from the Companions; did they think it sufficient to just merely recite the Holy Quran with their tongues or did they consider acting upon its teachings as being essential? They demonstrated obedience and loyalty and accepted being sacrificed like lambs and then they were bestowed all that they were bestowed, and they were honored and valued by God in a manner, and to an extent, that is not hidden from anyone.
The Promised Messiah (as) says that if you desire to get the grace and beneficence of God Almighty then do something, otherwise you will be thrown away like a useless thing.
The Promised Messiah (as) says that no person throws away gold or silver or anything good and valuable from his house, but rather he takes care of all such things and stores them safely. But if he sees a dead rat in the house he attends to its throwing away immediately and before any other thing. This is the way in which God Almighty holds dear to Himself, His servants, and grants them a long life, and places blessings in their businesses, and He does not let them go to waste, nor does He let them pass away in a disgraceful manner.
If you desire that Allah, the Exalted, should hold you dear and value you, then it is necessary that you become virtuous so that you may be held worthy in the estimation of Allah, the Exalted.
Those who fear God and obey His commandments are bestowed a distinction by God that separates them from the rest. This is the secret of how man can attain blessings from God that he should safeguard himself from evil. Wherever such a person lives he is held in high esteem because virtue emanates from him, he deals kindly with the poor, shows mercy to his neighbors, does no mischief, does not bring false cases against people, nor give false testimonies, but instead purifies his heart and remains inclined towards God and is known as a friend of God.
The Promised Messiah (as) says that to become a Wali [friend] of God is no easy matter, but rather it is very difficult because for this it is essential that one abandon evil, and also give up bad thoughts and passions. And this is a very difficult thing. To give up moral weaknesses and abandon evil habits becomes sometimes an extremely difficult thing. A murderer can give up committing murder and a thief can give up robbing people but for a morally bad person to give up anger is a very difficult thing to accomplish or for an arrogant person to abandon arrogance becomes a very onerous task. Because he looks down upon others with disdain and then he sees himself as insignificant. But it is true that he who, for the sake of the Greatness of God Almighty, will make himself small and insignificant, God Almighty will Himself make him great. Remember this well that no one can become great until he does not make himself small and insignificant. This is a means by which a light descends upon the heart of a person and he becomes pulled towards God Almighty. All the Auliya Allah [Friends of Allah] that have passed in the world, who are held in great esteem today by hundreds of thousands of people, they considered themselves smaller and more insignificant than even an ant and as a result, the Grace of God descended upon them, and they were bestowed those elevated stations which they deserved. Arrogance, miserliness, pride etc. and immoralities have in them a sort of shirk [associating partners with God] so this is why a person involved in such immoralities cannot receive any share from the Grace of God and remains deprived.
As opposed to this a poor and humble one receives the mercy of God.
Then the Promised Messiah (as) said to three people who had performed the Baia’at [Oath of Allegiance] at one time:
After performing the Baia’at, a person should not only believe that this Movement is true and think that acknowledging this he shall become the recipient of blessings.
The Promised Messiah (as) said by just declaring one’s belief nothing happens until good and virtuous actions do not follow. Now that you have entered this Movement, try to become righteous, become muttaqi, safeguard yourself from every evil, pass this time in prayers, spend your nights and days in supplications. When it is time for a trial, the Wrath of God is also excited, and at such a time you should indulge in prayer and charity and use soft language and make the seeking of forgiveness your practice, and pray fervently in your five daily prayers. Just declaring your faith is not of much use to man. Indeed, if, after accepting, a man throws it behind his back and forgets about it, he will not derive any benefit. Then to complain that the Baia’at has led to no benefit will serve no purpose because God Almighty is not satisfied with mere words.
Then drawing attention towards the doing of good and virtuous deeds, the Promised Messiah (as) said:
Understand that until you carry out good and virtuous deeds just believing does not bestow any benefits. A doctor writes a prescription and gives it to the patient and what is desired is that the patient should get what is written on it and consume it but if he does not make use of the medicines prescribed what benefit will he derive from the mere written prescription that he has with him?
The Promised Messiah (as) says that at this time you have repented, now God Almighty wishes to see in the future how much you have cleansed yourselves with this repentance. Now that you have believed, God Almighty desires to set a distinction based on taqwa. There are many people who complain against God, but they do not examine their own selves and the excesses of a man’s own self are what are responsible, as God is Most Merciful and Benevolent.
At one place the Promised Messiah (as) said:
Those who, by entering into this Movement, establish a relationship of fellowship and discipleship with me, what is desired by it is that they may advance to the highest stages of good conduct and good fortune and righteousness and so that nothing by way of discord or mischief, or bad conduct may come near them. They may be strict in offering their five daily prayers. They may be such as never lie. They may not hurt anyone with their tongue. They may not be guilty of any kind of evil. And they may be such as would never even think of being involved in any kind of mischief or excess or diorderliness or rebellion. They should abstain from all manner of sins, crimes, inappropriate actions and inappropriate speech, and all manner of carnal passions and needless and inappropriate deeds. And become the pure hearted, harmless and humble servants of God Almighty. And may no poisonous matter may remain in their being whatsoever.
Thus, these are the admonitions that we need to keep in our view at all times. These are the things that will make us the green and lush branches of the tree of the being of the Promised Messiah (as) and by fulfilling them we will fulfill the purpose of our having entered in the Baia’at with him. These are the things that will enable us to win the love of Allah, the Exalted, insha-Allah. And with these same good and virtuous deeds we will be able to draw the attention of the world towards ourselves also. May Allah make us like those true believers who are known by virtue of their faith and good and virtuous deeds and become those who attain the nearness of Allah, the Exalted.
After the Jumua prayers I shall lead the funeral prayers of Respected Rashid Ahmad Khan Sahib, son of Respected Late Iqbal Muhammad Khan Sahib. He passed away at the age of 91. Inna lil-lahay wa in-na elaihay rajayoon. He was born in India, Agra and obtained his early education in Qadian and then came to England in 1955. He kept working in British Railway as Chief Engineer and retired in 1980. When the land for Islamabad was purchased here in 1980 Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV (ra) appointed him as Caretaker there where he served with great zeal. He was from among the earliest residents of Islamabad. He was a sincere man. His father, Iqbal Muhammad Khan Sahib was from Gujranwala. He is survived by his wife and a son Shamim Ahmad Khan. May Allah elevate his station in Paradise. Bless him with forgiveness and bestow upon his son also to maintain a relationship of sincerity and loyalty with the Jama’at. May Allah bestow patience upon his wife and son also.

The Promised Messiah (peace be upon him) states at one place that:
"In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty has placed righteous deeds alongside faith. Righteous deeds are those in which there is not even an atom's worth of corruption. Remember that thieves are always lying in wait for man's deeds. What are they? Hypocrisy (when a person performs an act for show), self-conceit (when one performs a deed and becomes pleased with one's own self)." That is, such pleasure that comes from self-admiration. He said: "And various kinds of evils and sins that issue forth from him render the deeds void. A righteous deed is that in which there is no thought of injustice, self-conceit, hypocrisy, arrogance, or violation of human rights. Just as a person is saved through righteous deeds in the Hereafter, similarly, he is saved in this world too." That is, righteous deeds are also important in this world, and just as one who performs righteous deeds here will have his account taken in the Hereafter, similarly, his account will also be taken here, or the deeds done here will become the means of reward and punishment for man in the Hereafter. And then it also means that if there are righteous deeds, they make this worldly life a paradise as well. He said: "If even one person in a household is doing righteous deeds, the entire household is saved. Understand that until you have righteous deeds within you, mere belief is of no benefit." (Malfuzat, Volume 4, page 274-275, 1985 edition, published in England)
He stated that one should turn towards deeds with firm resolve and solid commitment. Make a strong and firm covenant. Likening faith to a tree, he said that faith is like a tree, and even the finest tree must be cared for in order to be made beneficial; only then does the tree become beneficial, only then does it remain alive when it is cared for. Attention must be given to it. Similarly, in order to perfect faith too, deeds are needed, and one needs to nurture and tend to one's faith through deeds, because without this, despite faith or claiming faith, a person cannot be called a believer. Without deeds, a person is like a tree whose beautiful, green branches have been cut off, making it unsightly. Whose fruits have been wasted. Whose shade-giving branches have deprived Allah Almighty's creation. A tree, however strong its roots may be and however massive a tree it may be, if it is deprived of fertilizer and water, if its emerging shoots and branches are wasted, then in time it will die. Its strong roots will be of no benefit to it. Even if it remains alive for some time, no one will look at such a tree, which is deprived of branches and devoid of giving any kind of benefit; no one's attention will be drawn to it. It will stand as a bare, stripped piece of wood. Every eye will look at and turn towards that beautiful plant and tree, which is green and flourishing. Whose beauty is visible. The tree, which at the proper time becomes laden with flowers and fruits. Which provides shade in the heat. People will like such a tree. So, indeed, faith is like the root. Indeed, a Muslim claims that his faith is strong. We see this expression often among Muslims. Many people also have zeal for the faith. They become ready to kill and be killed in the name of Islam. The various groups and organizations that have been formed nowadays — what claims do these people not make about the strength of their faith? But are they like that beautiful and pleasing tree or that garden which is benefiting the world? Are people drawn to it upon seeing its beauty? With as much intensity as these extremist groups or people are displaying extremism in the name of their religion, with that same intensity, the world is fleeing from them. The religion that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) brought drew even enemies towards itself, not only making them friends but also engulfing them in intense love. The teaching of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had such an effect that when the Muslim government on one occasion realized that confronting the Roman Empire was difficult at that time, and the occupied territory in which Christians and Jews were the majority — when the Muslims decided to leave it, the Christians and Jews together bid farewell to the Muslim army with tears, saying that we pray that you may once again take possession of this region so that we may continue to benefit from your shade-giving and fruit-bearing tree. The facilities you have provided us, even all our governments combined, cannot provide. (Taken from Futuh al-Buldan, page 87-88, Chapter Yawm al-Yarmuk, published by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut 2000, taken from Sair al-Sahaba, Volume Two, Part One, Muhajirin, page 171-172, publisher Idara Islamiat, Lahore)
This appreciation for those Muslims existed because, along with their faith, every action of theirs was a source of benefit.
So, mere claims and expressions of faith and announcements of the strength of its roots are of no use until the green branches and fruits of righteous deeds are showing their beauty and providing benefit. And when there is this beauty and conveyance of benefit, then the world also turns towards it and gathers around it, and then strives for its protection too. That is why Allah Almighty has not commanded every Muslim merely to be strong in faith, but almost everywhere faith is mentioned, He has linked and conditioned faith with righteous deeds, and to create this state, Allah Almighty also sends prophets. This state is created among believers when a relationship is also established with the prophet of the age. As I said, there are great groups who, in the name of religion and faith, express the strength of their roots, but what is happening? Not only are their mutual hatreds increasing, and one group is trying to prove its superiority over another by every possible means — by lawful and unlawful methods, through oppression — but even non-Muslims have become troubled and frightened of Islam because of them. The religion which gathered the love of non-Muslims, and even non-Muslims, became ready to fight on behalf of Muslims for the protection of Muslim governments. Its condition is now such that, let alone attracting outsiders, the mutual state of Muslims themselves, due to the lack of righteous deeds, is presenting the spectacle of قُلُوۡبُہُمۡ شَتّٰی (Al-Hashr: 15). Their hearts are divided. Today, it is the duty of every Ahmadi who has accepted the Imam and prophet of the age to present the picture of these correct deeds. The Jamaat of the Promised Messiah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) alone is that tree planted by Allah Almighty whose roots are strong and whose branches are also green, beautiful, and fruit-bearing, which draws the world's attention to itself. And all this is because the Promised Messiah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) acquainted us with the teaching of true Islam. He encouraged us to follow the example of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), emphasized it, drew our attention to it, and made its importance clear.
So, it is the Jamaat Ahmadiyya alone whose roots are also strong and whose branches are also green and beautiful and fruit-bearing, which draws the world's attention to itself. This is the tree, seeing which, people residing in every region of the world say: What kind of Islam is this that you present? Countless incidents now come to light such that, upon seeing the beauty of true Islam, people are left astonished. In Africa, at one place, a mosque was being inaugurated. The chief there was a Christian, and he too had been invited. He also attended. He said: I did not come here out of love for you people. I had only come to see what kind of Muslims these are in this age who have invited even a non-Muslim and a Christian to the inauguration of their mosque. Coming here, I was even more astonished to see that here, people of various religions are gathered, and the Ahmadis themselves, despite being Muslims, are displaying such high morals, the likes of which have no parallel. Whether young or old, rich or poor, these people are dealing with everyone with love and affection. And there are such relationships and such high morals being displayed here that are not seen anywhere. Then that chief said that such mosques and such Islam are the need of the time. So he said that all my doubts and suspicions about Islam have been removed. And then he further said that you have not given this region a new mosque, but rather you have given us a new life. You have taught us the ways of the higher values of life. So such are the trees about which the Holy Quran has stated that their roots are also firm in the earth, and due to faith and righteous deeds — if humans are likened to trees — their green branches are also touching the heights of the sky. So, as I said, due to accepting the Imam of the age, it is the duty of every Ahmadi to become a green branch along with the strength of faith. To become the beautiful leaves of the green branches. To become the beautiful flowers and fruits that grow on them. Which not only appear beautiful to the world but are also beneficial. Are also conveyors of benefit. Otherwise, being perfect in faith and conviction without deeds is useless. As I mentioned, those people of the world who appear to us seemingly perfect in faith and conviction — they may consider and call themselves perfect in faith and conviction, but they are becoming a stumbling block for the world. We can fulfill the right of being Ahmadi only when we are those who, due to our righteous deeds, display high morals on every side. When we, due to righteous deeds, become ones who display the beauty of Islam in our neighborhood, city, and country. We should not be among those who engage in all kinds of disputes, quarrels, habits of backbiting, belittling others, being devoid of mercy, doing favors and then reminding others of them — rather, we should be those who avoid these things and display high morals. The Holy Quran repeatedly exhorts us to adopt high morals and perform good deeds.
Some people have the habit that under some momentary impulse, they do a favor to someone, they help, but later at some point they also remind that person, saying I did this favor for you, or they expect that the person obligated by their favor should remain their slave for life. And if the person under obligation does not live up to expectations, then they do not hesitate to cause him distress. This is not Islamic teaching. Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran: یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا لَا تُبۡطِلُوۡا صَدَقٰتِکُمۡ بِالۡمَنِّ وَالۡاَذٰی (Al-Baqarah: 265) O ye who believe! render not vain your alms by reproach and injury like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men, and he believes not in Allah and the Last Day, whose faith is weak. Not only weak, but devoid of faith. Allah Almighty has, in numerous places in the Holy Quran and through various references, repeatedly exhorted a believer that righteous deeds are necessary along with faith, and there are various benefits to this. So, where a believer becomes a being beneficial to others through righteous deeds, there he himself is also tasting the sweet fruits. For example, regarding those who believe and perform righteous deeds, Allah Almighty states that these people will be the ones to receive Allah Almighty's forgiveness. These will be the people who will attain a high station in the gardens of paradise and will be in such gardens where rivers will flow, and they will be the owners of those rivers. Then Allah Almighty states that those who, along with faith, perform good deeds will receive such great and excellent rewards that you cannot even imagine. Mere claim of faith does not make one deserving of the best reward; rather, when there are righteous deeds, then the best reward will be received, gardens of paradise will be received, and forgiveness will come. Then He has also said that those who perform righteous deeds along with faith — Allah Almighty will grant them pure sustenance. Which is sustenance in this world, too, and sustenance in the Hereafter as well. Those who perform righteous deeds will have no fear. They will be at peace. They will not have any kind of worry. Neither fear of this world, nor the fear of the next world, that I have not done any good deeds. Allah Almighty will grant tranquility to their hearts. And how could there be fear? Those performing righteous deeds, by performing every action for the sake of Allah Almighty's pleasure, are going into the embrace of Allah Almighty. Then Allah Almighty states at one place: اِنَّ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ سَیَجۡعَلُ لَہُمُ الرَّحۡمٰنُ وُدًّا (Maryam: 97) Those who believe and do good deeds—the Gracious God will create deep love for them. The meaning of وُدًّا is deep love and connection. Not superficial love or affection. Deep love and connection. Such a strong relationship that can never be severed. Rather, such a deep relationship as a peg is driven into the ground, becoming firm. In the same way, it will be driven in. In this manner, this love will be embedded in the heart. So, the meaning of this verse will be that those who possess strong faith and perform righteous deeds, Allah Almighty will drive His love into the hearts of such believers like a peg. Thus, they will be those who love Allah Almighty, and then they will continue to advance further in faith and righteous deeds. Or it means that Allah Almighty Himself will love such believers with such love that will never end. So if Allah Almighty's love is embedded in the heart of a person, or Allah Almighty loves believers in such a way that, as it were, their love has become embedded in the heart of Allah Almighty, then who can be more successful than such a person? In his very being, he becomes such a beautiful and shade-giving tree that benefits others, because his every act, due to the love of Allah Almighty, is such that it earns Allah Almighty's pleasure and conveys benefit to others.
Then this verse will also mean that Allah Almighty will firmly drive love for mankind into the hearts of those who believe and perform righteous deeds.
So a true believer can never even think of causing pain to another human being. The demand of love for mankind is that a true believer should always be concerned with conveying benefit to them. As I have stated before, if this trait is created among Muslims, then the practices of violating each other's rights, committing oppression, and killing outsiders and others — which exist in governments, in so-called organizations, and among the masses, and which are very commonly seen these days — would never be seen. The teaching of Allah Almighty is simply not being acted upon, which is why everything is happening. But the tragedy is that all this oppression is happening in the name of Allah Almighty, whereas Allah Almighty says: create wudd, create love. Create such love that becomes embedded in hearts. Become such that you convey benefit to others. So if the true teaching is acted upon, then these sufferings and pains being inflicted upon one another would never be seen. A beautiful image of the shade-giving tree of Islam would arise in the minds of the world. Then this verse can also mean that the love of Muslims should be embedded in the hearts of mankind like a peg. Allah Almighty certainly has the power to do so, but for the achievement of this matter, He has placed the condition of righteous deeds along with faith. As I said, for the earlier Muslims of the first centuries, this very love existed in the hearts of people — which Allah Almighty had created in the hearts of Christians and in the hearts of Jews — who wept upon the Muslims leaving the area, and prayed for their return. Rather, history also tells us that Jews would say: We will give our lives but will not let the Christian army enter the city. You stay here; we will protect you. (Taken from Futuh al-Buldan, page 87-88, Chapter Yawm al-Yarmuk, published by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut 2000, taken from Sair al-Sahaba, Volume Two, Part One, Muhajirin, page 171-172, publisher Idara Islamiat, Lahore)
So this was the effect of good deeds that manifested from Muslims at every level. This drew the world towards this beautiful tree and conveyed benefits to the world.
Today, it is the duty of the slaves of the true servant of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that, along with strengthening the roots of faith, they become those beautiful leaves, branches, and fruits of righteous deeds that draw the world towards the beauty of Islam. Which conveys benefit to the world. We should be those who create love for Allah Almighty, and we should also be those who attain the love of Allah Almighty. Love for mankind should also be our priority, and we should also be those who attract the attention of mankind, because without this, we cannot become those who fulfill the purpose of entering the Bai'at of the Promised Messiah (peace be upon him).
The Promised Messiah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has, on many occasions in his various writings, sayings, and gatherings, drawn our attention towards focusing on our righteous deeds. Pay attention to your deeds. Perform such deeds that are righteous deeds, that are in accordance with Allah Almighty's pleasure, that save the world from afflictions. I read one extract earlier at the beginning. I place some other extracts before you. He said on one occasion — That is, what is my teaching, and you should act in accordance with it. He states:
"Only that person enters our Jamaat who makes our teaching his code of conduct and acts upon it according to his strength and effort. But one who merely has his name registered and does not act in accordance with the teaching should remember that Allah Almighty has intended to make this Jamaat a special Jamaat, and any person who is not really part of the Jamaat cannot remain in the Jamaat merely by registering his name. There will come a time or another when he will become separated. So, as far as possible, bring your deeds under the teaching that is given. Deeds are like wings. Without deeds, a person cannot fly to the spiritual stages and cannot attain those high objectives that Allah Almighty has placed beneath them. Birds have understanding; if they do not utilize this understanding, the tasks that are accomplished by them would not be possible. For example, if the honeybee did not have understanding, it could not produce honey, and similarly, the carrier pigeons (the pigeons through which messages are conveyed), to what extent they have to use their understanding. What far-distant journeys they undertake and deliver letters. In the same way, wonderful tasks are taken from birds. So first, it is necessary for a person to use his understanding and consider whether the work I am about to do is under the commands of Allah Almighty and for His pleasure or not. When he sees this and uses his understanding, then it becomes necessary to use his hands. He should not be lazy or negligent. Yes, it is necessary to see that the teaching is correct. Sometimes it also happens that the teaching is correct, but a person, due to his own foolishness and ignorance, or due to the mischief and false statements of someone else, falls into deception. Therefore, one should investigate with an empty mind." (Malfuzat, Volume 4, page 439-440, 1985 edition, published in England)
He is addressing both others and outsiders, and his own people, too. Then he stated at one place:
"Every person should fear Allah Almighty, and the fear of Allah Almighty will make him the inheritor of many virtues. The one who fears Allah Almighty is the good one, because due to this fear, he gains insight through which he abstains from sins. There are many people who, contemplating Allah Almighty's favors, bestowals, and bounties, become embarrassed and refrain from disobedience and transgression against Him. But there is also one type of people who fear His wrath. Actually, the matter is that the good and righteous is only the one who turns out good upon Allah Almighty's examination. There are many people who deceive themselves and consider themselves to be righteous. But in reality, the righteous one is he whose name is registered as righteous in the office of Allah Almighty. At this time, there is the manifestation of Allah Almighty's attribute of Sattar (Coverer of faults)" (that is, in this world Allah Almighty is concealing faults) "but on the Day of Resurrection, when the manifestation of unveiling will appear, at that time the entire reality will be exposed. At the time of this manifestation, there will be many who today appear very righteous and pious, but on the Day of Resurrection, they will be seen as great transgressors and sinners. The reason for this is that righteous deeds cannot occur through our own scheming and resolution. In reality, righteous deeds are those in which there is no kind of corruption, because 'salih' (righteous) is the opposite of 'fasad' (corruption). Just as food is wholesome when it is neither raw nor rotten, nor of some inferior species, but rather such that it immediately becomes part of the body. Similarly, it is necessary that there be no kind of corruption in righteous deeds either. That is, it should be in accordance with Allah Almighty's command, and then in accordance with the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and then there should be no kind of laziness in it, no self-conceit, no hypocrisy, nor should it be from one's own scheming. When there is such a deed, it is called a righteous deed, and this is kibrit-e-ahmar (red sulfur)." (That is, an extremely rare thing.)
Regarding how Satan is leading astray, he is constantly pursuing the believers. Therefore, all people, every believer, should try to save their faith and righteous deeds from this Satan. He states:
"Satan is always lying in wait to lead a person astray and corrupt his deeds, to such an extent that he wants to lead him astray even in deeds of virtue." (Do not think that Satan does not lead astray in deeds of virtue) "And he devises means to introduce some kind of corruption. If a person performs prayers, even in that he wants to introduce some branch of corruption such as hypocrisy." (That is, prayers performed for show) "He even wants to involve the one who leads prayers in this affliction. So one should never feel safe from his attack, because his attacks on the transgressors and sinners are quite open. They are, as it were, his prey. But he does not refrain from attacking the pious as well, and finds an opportunity in some form to attack them too. Those who are under the grace of God and are aware of Satan's most subtle mischief — they pray to Allah Almighty for protection. But those who are still raw and weak sometimes fall into it." (Malfuzat, Volume 6, page 425-426, 1985 edition, published in England)
Then, regarding the necessity of deeds, he states:
"A person thinks that merely reciting the Kalimah by tongue is sufficient, or merely saying Astaghfirullah is sufficient. But remember, mere boasting and bragging by the tongue is not sufficient. Even if a person says Astaghfirullah a thousand times by his tongue or recites the tasbih a hundred times, it will be of no benefit to him. Because God has made man as man, not as a parrot. It is the parrot's task to keep repeating from its tongue and understands not even dust. Man's task is that whatever he says with his mouth, he should say it after thinking, and then also act in accordance with it." (Think about what you are saying and then also act upon it) "But if he keeps speaking like a parrot, then remember that there is no blessing in mere tongue. Until the heart is with it and the deeds are in accordance with it, those will be considered mere words in which there is no goodness or blessing, because they are mere utterance, even if it be the recitation of the Holy Quran and Istighfar. Allah Almighty desires deeds, which is why He has repeatedly given the command to perform righteous deeds. Until this happens, you cannot draw close to God. Some foolish people say that today we have completed the recitation of the Holy Quran in one day. But someone should ask them: what benefit did this bring? You used only the tongue but completely abandoned the rest of the limbs. Whereas Allah Almighty has created all the limbs so that they may be utilized. This is why it has come in a Hadith that some people recite the Quran and the Quran curses them, because their recitation is mere words, and there is no action upon it. The person who does not align his conduct in accordance with the limits established by Allah Almighty is making a mockery, because mere recitation is not the will of Allah Almighty; He desires action." (Malfuzat, Volume 6, page 398-399, 1985 edition, published in England)
Then he stated:
"Remember well that mere boasting and verbal back-and-forth have no benefit or effect until it is accompanied by action and good deeds are performed with the hands, feet, and other limbs. Just as Allah Almighty took service from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) by sending down the Holy Quran. Did they consider it sufficient merely to recite the Quran by their tongues, or did they consider it necessary to act upon it? They displayed obedience and loyalty such that they were slaughtered like sheep, and then what they attained, and how Allah Almighty valued them, is no hidden matter."
He states: "If you wish to attain Allah Almighty's grace and bounty, then do something to demonstrate it; otherwise you will be cast aside like a useless thing." He states: "No one throws out the good things and gold and silver of his house; rather, you keep these items and all useful and valuable things carefully. But if a dead mouse appears in the house, you will throw it out first of all. In the same way, Allah Almighty always holds His righteous servants dear. He prolongs their lives and places a blessing in their affairs. He does not let them go to waste and does not put them to a death of disgrace. If you want Allah Almighty to value you, then for that it is necessary that you become righteous, so that you may become worthy of value in Allah Almighty's sight. Those who fear God and observe His commands — He places a distinction between them and others. This is the very secret of a person attaining blessing — that he keeps abstaining from evils. Such a person, wherever he resides, is worthy of esteem, because goodness reaches others through him. He treats the poor well. He shows mercy to neighbors. He does not engage in mischief. He does not fabricate false cases. He does not give false testimony. Rather, he purifies his heart and is engaged towards God, and is called the friend (Wali) of God."
He stated: "Becoming the friend of God is not easy, but very difficult, because for that it is necessary to abandon evils, abandon evil intentions and impulses, and this is a very difficult task. Abandoning moral weaknesses and evils sometimes becomes very difficult. A murderer can abandon committing murder, a thief can abandon committing theft, but for an ill-mannered person, abandoning anger becomes difficult, or for an arrogant person, abandoning arrogance becomes difficult, because in this, he looks down upon others with contempt and then considers himself lowly. But it is true that whoever makes himself small for the greatness of Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty Himself will make him great. Remember this with certainty: no one can be great until he makes himself small" (that is, makes his own self small). This is a means by which a light descends upon a person's heart, and he is drawn towards Allah Almighty. The friends of Allah who have passed in the world, and today millions of people who hold them in esteem and honor, considered themselves to be lower than even an ant, upon which Allah Almighty's grace accompanied them, and granted them those stages of which they were deserving. Arrogance, miserliness, pride, and other ill manners also contain within themselves a portion of shirk (associating partners with God), which is why one who commits these ill manners does not partake of Allah Almighty's bounties; rather, he becomes deprived. Contrary to this, the one who exercises humility and meekness becomes the recipient of Allah Almighty's mercy." (Malfuzat, Volume 6, page 400-401, 1985 edition, published in England)
Then three persons came for Bai'at. After Bai'at, he advised them:
"A person should not, after taking Bai'at, only believe that this Movement is the truth and gain blessing merely from this much believing." He stated: "Allah Almighty is not pleased with mere belief until the deeds are good. Strive that, having entered this Movement, you become righteous. Become God-fearing. Avoid every evil. Spend this time in prayer. Remain engaged day and night in supplication. When the time of trial comes, Allah Almighty's wrath is also kindled. At such a time, engage in supplication, humble entreaty, and charity. Keep your tongues soft. Make Istighfar your habit. Make supplications in your prayers… Mere belief does not avail a person. If a person believes and then casts it behind his back, it will be of no benefit to him. Then to complain afterward that no benefit came from the Bai'at is futile. Allah Almighty is not pleased merely by speech." (Malfuzat, Volume 4, page 274, 1985 edition, published in England)
Then drawing attention towards righteous deeds, he stated:
"Understand that until you have righteous deeds within you, mere belief is of no benefit. When a physician writes a prescription and gives it, the meaning is that whatever is written in it should be taken and consumed. If he does not use those medicines and merely keeps the prescription, what benefit will it bring him?" He stated, "Now at this time you have repented. Now Allah Almighty wishes to see how much you have purified yourselves through this repentance. Now is the time when Allah Almighty wishes to make a distinction through Taqwa. There are many people who complain against God and do not look at themselves. The injustices are of a person's own self; otherwise, Allah Almighty is Most Merciful and Most Gracious." (Malfuzat, Volume 4, page 275, 1985 edition, published in England)
Then he stated at one place:
"Those who, having entered this Movement, maintain a relationship of devotion and discipleship with me, the purpose of this is that they may attain the highest degrees of good conduct, righteousness, and Taqwa, and that no corruption, mischief, or bad conduct may come near them. They should be regular in the five daily prayers. They should not tell lies. They should not give offense to anyone with their tongue. They should not commit any kind of evil deed, and should not even bring to their hearts any thought of mischief, oppression, corruption, or strife. In short, they should abstain from every kind of disobedience, crime, indecent and unspeakable acts, and all carnal impulses and improper movements, and become the pure-hearted, harmless, and humble-natured servants of Allah Almighty. And no poisonous ferment should remain in their being." (Majmuah Ishtiharat, Volume Two, page 220, Ishtihar number 191, titled "An Important Notice to Warn My Jamaat")
So these are the counsels which we need to keep before us at all times. These are the very matters which will make us become the green branches of the tree of the being of the Promised Messiah (peace be upon him). It is through this that the purpose of our pledge of Bai'at will also be fulfilled. These very matters will also make us those who attain Allah Almighty's love, and through these very righteous deeds, we will be able to become those who draw the world towards us. May Allah Almighty make us among those true believers who are recognized by their faith and righteous deeds and become the recipients of Allah Almighty's nearness.
After the Friday prayer, I will lead one funeral prayer in absentia. Respected Rashid Ahmad Khan Sahib, son of the late respected Iqbal Muhammad Khan Sahib, used to live in Inner Park, London. He passed away on 16th September at the age of 91. اِنَّالِلّٰہِ وَاِنَّا اِلَیْہِ رَاجِعُوْنَ He was born in Agra, India. He received his early education in Qadian. Then, in 1955, he came here to England. Here, he served in the British Navy as a Chief Engineer. He retired in 1980. When the place of Islamabad was purchased in 1984, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV (may Allah have mercy on him) appointed him as supervisor there, where he rendered service with great hard work. He was among the early residents there. Similarly, he was granted the opportunity to serve for a long period as Secretary Maal in Spen Valley, Yorkshire. He was a righteous and sincere person. His father, Iqbal Muhammad Khan Sahib, was from Gujranwala. He, too, was very sincere. He also built a mosque in Jamia Ahmadiyya Rabwah in the name of his wife, called Hasan Iqbal. Besides his wife, he leaves behind one son, Shamim Ahmad Khan. May Allah Almighty elevate his stations. May He treat him with forgiveness, and may He also grant his son the opportunity to maintain a relationship of sincerity and loyalty with the Jamaat. And may He grant patience and fortitude to both of them — the wife and the son.
